Yesterday I was at O’Hare Airport in Chicago and noticed a huge ad by Oracle targeting pharma. The ad was a one-line statment that roughly said, “Top 20 pharma companies use Oracle” and echoed the information in this brochure from the Oracle website:
Oracle customers include
• 20 of the top 20 communication service providers
• 20 of the top 20 retailers
• 20 of the top 20 insurance companies
• 20 of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies
• 20 of the top 20 banks
• 20 of the top 20 automotive manufacturers
• 10 of the top 10 automotive suppliers
Of this list, automotive manufacturers/suppliers, banks, and retailers have been especially hard hit in the financial meltdown, so it’s not too surprising that Oracle might focus on other customers lately. In the same terminal I also noticed an SAS ad trumpeting its business relationship with Eli Lilly. Coincidence or trend?

What’s not totally clear is *what* these companies is using Oracle for and whether they’re making further investments in Oracle technologies.

On their websites, both Oracle and SAS list similar offerings, including clinical trial and data management applications, software to manage sales/marketing, and software for operations/manufacturing planning. Not clear what pharma uses the most.
